How to Grow Vegetables in a 10x10 Plot
- 1). Lay 1 inch each of compost, manure and peat moss on the soil annually. Dig it in to a depth of 12 inches with a shovel.
- 2). Interplant fast-growing crops with slower-growing crops. For example, lettuce is sown early in the season and grows quickly. Plant it between slow-growing tomatoes. The lettuce will be done by the time the tomatoes are large.
- 3). Plant crops in a block pattern instead of in traditional rows. For example, plant leaf lettuce in a staggered pattern so you have 6 lettuce plants, spaced 4 inches apart in a 24-inch-by-24-inch square. Plants can be planted more closely together using this arrangement.
- 4). Practice succession plantings. Instead of planting a large quantity of one crop, plant a smaller quantity and replant it again in a few weeks, so you have a constantly maturing crop all summer long.
- 5). Install trellises or stakes to train beans, peas, tomatoes and melons. Using vertical space takes up less room in the garden than allowing plants to sprawl.
