How to Estimate the Costs of Remodeling a Bathroom

Instructions

1

Decide exactly what you want to accomplish in this remodeling job. The costs will be greatly different for just replacing fixtures then for a complete overhaul of your bathroom. Make a list of each item you want to replace or overhaul so you can estimate the cost for your particular job.
2

Choose the type of bath you want. Choices range from a one-piece tub/shower combination, one-piece tub, tub with water jets or stall shower. Write on your list the piece you choose.
3

Replace the entire toilet or just upgrade it. Many older toilets use more water per flush but do not clog up as some newer models do. Detail your list by writing "toilet" or "toilet parts," if you upgrade.
4

Upgrade your existing vanity or add a new one. You may want to install dual sinks for convenience. Alternatively, install a new faucet in your existing sink for a less expensive makeover. On your list write "vanity" then make sub headings for sinks, faucets and other pieces you need for your vanity.
5

Check medicine cabinets and linen cabinets. Choose a full linen closet if you have the space or a half closet. More space is good, but it does cost more.
6

Install a new exhaust fan if needed. Check the flooring and replace if the floor is loose or if you just want to update your floor. Choose linoleum or marble tile.
7

Go online to ImproveNet (see Resources). Get prices for each item on your list. Total the list for a complete estimate of remodeling your bathroom.
