How to Install a Seth Thomas Floor Clock
- 1). Measure the distance, where your clock will stand, between the floor and the ceiling. Calculate the height of your clock from its base to its tallest pediment. Seth Thomas floor clocks differ in height, and you should take careful measurements to prevent damage to your clock or ceiling.
- 2). Stand the clock in an upright position and place a level across the top of the clock case. Locate the levelers attached to each corner of the base of the clock. Turn a leveler to the right to make the corner lower or to the left to raise the corner. Check the level often as you make the adjustments. Use wooden shims, if no levelers exist. Trim excess shim material with a utility knife. The most important step in a Seth Thomas clock installation, proper clock leveling, determines the accuracy of your timepiece.
- 3). Open the door in the front of the clock and find the hook, or pin, in the pendulum guide; hold it steady in one hand. Grasp the pendulum in your other hand and gently slip the pendulum hook over the pin in the pendulum guide. Release the pendulum and let it hang freely.
- 4). Inspect the bottom of each clock weight. Your Seth Thomas clock has three different-sized weights. Each weight has one of three words marked on the bottom -- Left, Center or Right. Attach each weight, in its correct place, to the hook that extends from the corresponding cable pulley.
- 5). Move the minute hand to set the clock. Never attempt to adjust the time setting using the hour hand. Gently move the minute hand backward, counterclockwise, so as not to activate the chiming mechanism of your clock.
- 6). Place the palm of your hand against the edge of the pendulum disk. Move the disk to one side and release. This allows the pendulum to swing freely. Withdraw your hand and close the door to the front of the clock.
- 7). Dribble a few drops of furniture polish on a clean rag and wipe the case of your Seth Thomas clock; this will remove fingerprints left from the setup process. Buff the wood briskly, with a clean rag, to enhance the luster of the finish.
- 8). Squirt some window cleaner on a paper towel and clean both sides of the glass door that protects the clock face. Finish the job with another dry paper towel to remove any remaining smudges.
