The Avery Point Lighthouse Collectible

The Avery Point Lighthouse, while only in operation from 1944-1967, stands as a memorial to the legacy of lighthouse keepers.
It is a fifty-five foot tall tower, made mostly from red blocks, and has a wonderful octagon shaped wood lantern room.
This has always lent uniqueness to the tower.
Included are antique balusters made from Italian marble.
It sits on the university campus grounds.
Because it was abandoned, after years of neglect, a barrier was erected to prevent further damage from vandalism.
Because it was no longer maintained, it started to fall into heavy decay, so much so that chunks were actually falling from its surface on an every day basis.
While no longer structurally sound, the Avery Point Lighthouse was still an important part of the Groton community, as well as the state.
In order to preserve this lighthouse from further deterioration, the mayor of Groton, Jim Streeter, spearheaded a campaign to save this historical monument.
With his help, the Avery Point Lighthouse Society was formed in the year 2000.
This is part of the American Lighthouse Society, which is dedicated to preserving historical lighthouses all over the country.
With the help of the society as well as Jim Streeter, hundreds of thousands of dollars were raised to restore the lighthouse to its pristine condition, as well as a number of other things.
It is now listed as a National Historical Site, and is also a state Landmark.
A nearby boat building company also created a replica of the lantern room, complete with a 200 candle power lighting system.
More than 200 members are now in the society, these and the many campus volunteers help to keep the preservation efforts going.
People from all over the country are now coming to see this continuing project, with many donations.
