How to Build a Canoe for a School Project
- 1). Make the sides. Cut two 10-inch wide pieces from the first plywood piece. Be sure to wear proper safety gear including mask, gloves and eye protection whenever you work with wood.
- 2). Drill four small holes into both ends of the boards.
- 3). Fasten the ends together with cable ties.
- 4). Trace the bottom. Set the second piece of plywood on the ground. Have the person who will use the canoe sit in the middle of the plywood piece. Bring the two sides down around the person and ask him or her to push the sides to the desired width. Draw the bottom shape of the canoe from the outside using a pencil.
- 5). Cut out the bottom of the canoe with the jigsaw, following the line very carefully.
- 6). Fasten the bottom to the canoe with some cable ties.
- 7). Seal the canoe's seams from both the outside and the inside using the glass fiber tape.
- 8). Pour polyester resin onto all the seams to completely seal them. Paint the resin onto the outside seams for additional waterproofing.
