Skylights are a great idea to bring a source of natural lighting into your home. They need to be put into your roof according to the building codes in your area. Before putting any type of alternate skylight that might be cheaper, you should check with the rules and regulations first. You do not need to remodel your entire ceiling to put in a skylight today, making installation cheaper. - One cheap way to pick up a skylight is through a secondhand venue. Whether it be a wrecking company or on eBay, these places sell secondhand windows and skylights at a much reduced price. Do check the integrity of the item before buying it to make sure there is no damage that will cause leaks. This can be done in person or by requesting extra snap shots of the sky light from the seller if you are getting it online.
- Skylights were just a window made of panes of glass when they first were built into the apartments and homes of the 1940s and 1950s. They were propped open on a stick to let fresh air in. If you are licensed in construction, you can devise a skylight made with an old window as they used decades ago, as long is it is up to code. This might be a cheap way to install a skylight, but if doesn't keep out the elements it can be prove to be very expensive in water damage.
- The plastic dome type skylights are the least inexpensive to buy in comparison to the high end glass ones. These can be purchased on sale or at a builders outlet for a cheap skylight installation. They do not look much different than their glass peers, especially when they are on a high ceiling. This may be the way to go for cheap skylights.
- Tubular skylight kits allow you to cheaply put in a skylight through an attic or thick roof area without the expense of remodeling the entire roof. The skylight is connected to a tube that allows the light to travel long distances before coming through your ceiling. For the other type of skylights you would need to raise the ceiling to your attic roof to install them. The tubes allow you to save that cost, but they are much smaller and offer no view.
