Create a nursery theme that suites your child by decorating with colors and patterns that match the overall theme of the room. For instance, beige walls go well with a teddy bear theme, and yellow and pink walls work for a baby girl's princess-themed nursery. In addition, painted stripes or polka dots could fit with a nautical, cartoon or other general theme. - Paint all the walls in the room pink and leave the ceiling white. Allow the paint to dry and then paint a lady bug border around the room featuring ladybugs with brown bodies and spots and pink wings. You can also find ladybug bedding and nursery decor to match these colors at many department stores. (See resources for options).
If you have a little boy you can go with a traditional black and red ladybug theme. Leave the walls white and paint large red and black ladybugs around the border of the room. You can find solid red bedding for the crib or look for ladybug designs. - A nautical theme is a simple design for a baby's room. Paint the walls light blue and leave the ceiling white. When the paint is dry, paint small red, white and blue boats along the border of the room. Install two shelves and fill those shelves with miniature boats. Buy basic blue and white bedding for the crib and bring in additional nautical-themed items such as framed drawings of boats or lighthouses. White furniture works well with this theme.
- A cherry blossom room works well for a young girl or boy. Paint all the walls in the room blue, including the ceiling. Paint white clouds on the ceiling only. Then paint a large cherry tree on one of the walls in the room. Cherry trees stand out because the bark is dark brown and the flowers are pastel pink or white. Decorate with dark cherry wood furniture to match the bark of the tree. Use solid colors for the crib bedding such as dark blue or pink, and bring in other decor that matches the theme of the room such as a pink table and chair set.
- A teddy bear theme works well for a boy or girl. Paint the walls beige and leave the ceiling white. Decorate with a teddy bear wall paper border or paint small bears on the border of the room. If the room is for a girl, paint pink bows on the bears' heads and if the room is for a boy, paint blue bow-ties around the bears' necks. You can also paint larger bears on various places in the room. A bear design is simple and most people are able to do this, but you can find stencils at a craft store to easily make your bear shape.
Place teddy bears on the dresser or other places in the room and buy teddy bear bedding. You could also hang framed photos of teddy bears.
