    • 1). Fill any bullet holes and the beak with paper towels or cotton balls. This will ensure that blood and fluids do not damage the feathers. If white plumage is soiled by blood or fluids, rinse the affected area with cold water.

    • 2). Wrap the feet with wet paper towels. This will make sure they are not dehydrated after the bird is kept in the freezer.

    • 3). Wrap the neck and the head with dry paper towels. Three or four paper towels will be adequate.

    • 4). Tuck the neck and head beside the body and under the wing. Do this carefully, making sure as before that no fluids soil the feathers.

    • 5). Take the newspapers and wrap the bird. Use masking tape to keep the wrap in place. Stick the bird in a plastic bag and seal it.

    • 6). Transport the wrapped bird to the taxidermist. If you have to wait a day or two because his office is closed, take the bird quickly to your home instead and replace the first layer of newspaper with a damp towel. Then put the bird back in a plastic bag, seal, and stick it in the freezer until the taxidermist becomes available.
