We all know the dangers about smoking.
It is hard to miss them as they are everywhere even on the packet of cigarettes.
Even though the warnings can be clearly seen their familiarity can make us complacent towards them to the point where we just ignore them.
Many young people who smoke are a particularly hard group to persuade to stop smoking.
The warnings that it can damage your health have little impact on a teenager because at that age they feel they can live forever.
For the older more long term habitual smoker they become immune to the many warnings that are spouted out by the government.
Their craving for nicotine is far more powerful than an advertising billboard.
Another problem is that health warnings do not make a real impact in helping people give up because the habit of smoking is so widespread and commonly practised.
Probably a more effective way to help you give up is to connect with famous people or idols you looked up to in the past that have died due to their smoking habit.
You will not find it difficult to find one as there are many of them.
This is not surprising that as recent as the 1960's cigarettes where being advertised to improve your health.
Most people believed this before large numbers started dying from the habit.
In those days it was fashionable to be seen with a cigarette in your hand and it was more widespread than it is today.
If one your childhood idols died of smoking related illness such as lung cancer it may help you rethink your own smoking habit.
You can bring this closer to home by researching for famous people who were born in your country or even your home town or city.
You can also look at your own family and find out the history of past relatives and if the evil weed stole their life while they were in their prime of life.
This may or may not make you quit smoking but what it can do is strengthen your determination when combined with other strategies to give you a better chance of successfully giving up.
