How to Uninstall Windows XP in a Dual-Boot System
- 1). Reboot your computer and start it up in Safe Mode. To start your computer in Safe Mode, continuously tap F8 throughout the boot-up process. This will prevent your computer from entering into your default installation of Windows XP, instead placing your computer into a restricted state in which crucial system changes can be made.
- 2). Open the "Start" menu and click on "Control Panel," then "Add or Remove Programs" button. Once there, search for the entry that reads "Uninstall Windows XP." This entry may or may not be present depending on the method that you used to install the OS. If it is, simply click on the "Uninstall Windows XP" button to accomplish your goal.
- 3). Format the partition containing Windows XP to uninstall the operating system where you do not have an uninstall option present in Safe Mode. Formatting the drive will erase all of the drive contents, so be sure to back up your important data prior to performing the operation.
- 4). Insert the Windows XP installation CD into your computer and reboot. As the computer is rebooting, read the on-screen prompts and press the designated key to enter into BIOS. Once in BIOS, go to the "Boot Menu" and change the first boot device to read from the CD-ROM. Save and exit changes.
- 5). Go through the Windows XP installation process, deleting the existing partition when prompted (through use of the "D" key) and formatting the entire drive to remove the existing installation of Windows. Abort the installation process by canceling after the format is complete, and you will have a clean area of the hard drive to install new programs upon.
