How to Add Insulation to Older Brick Homes

    • 1). Find and mark each stud in the exterior wall from inside the room using your electronic studfinder. Place a small X midway between each of the stud marks. The X marks should end up being 16 inches apart.

    • 2). Load your drill with its hole saw. Cut out a hole at each X mark, leaving a row of holes across the top of the wall. Set aside the cutout circles for re-installation later.

    • 3). Fill your rented insulation blower with cellulose insulation. Push the hose into the first hole, all the way in to the bottom of the interior cavity of the wall.

    • 4). Turn on the blower, filling the cavity between the first two studs. Withdraw the hose slowly as the insulation fills the space, until the hose is back out. Repeat at each hole, filling each cavity.

    • 5). Press a cutout circle (saved earlier) into the first hole. Cover the perimeter of the circle with self-adhesive drywall tape. Spread joint compound over the tape with your drywall knife, getting it flat and smooth.

    • 6). Repeat for each hole.

    • 7). Let the compound dry for six hours. Spread on a second coat, let it dry and add a third coat. Let the final coat set for 12 hours.

    • 8). Sand the joint compound with a drywall sander, getting it flat and smooth. Repaint the whole wall.
