How to Benchmark the iPhone
PerformanceTest Mobile (Free)
PerformanceTest Mobile runs on iPhones using iOS 3.0 or later. It tests your iPhone in a number of different categories, including processor, memory, internal storage and 2D/3D graphics. The app also provides a breakdown of your iPhone's specifications: the device model, iOS version, CPU frequency and available memory are shown on the System screen. You can compare your iPhone's figures against other devices via the iPhone Benchmarks website run by the developers of PerformanceTest Mobile.
GFXBench (Free)
GFXBench, as the name suggests, tests the graphics capabilities of your iPhone through a series of complex three-dimensional renderings and animations. The app generates parallax mapping, complex particles, motion blur and realistic shadows to push your iPhone to the limit and see how well it can keep up. Uploaded results from other users can be viewerd at the GFXBench website and compared with your own scores. GFXBench is compatible with devices running iOS 6.0 or later and is optimized for the iPhone 5.
SunSpider (Free)
SunSpider is a Web-based benchmark that you can test through the Safari browser (or any other browser app on your iPhone). The site tests the iPhone's browser in terms of its ability to execute the JavaScript language, which powers many of the interactive elements of the Internet. Generating tags, mapping out sites, creating Web page graphics and encrypting data are all tasks that are often handled by JavaScript, and the SunSpider benchmark tests how well your iPhone can cope with them. The SunSpider JavaScript Benchmark can be run from any browser, whether desktop or mobile.
Linpack (Free)
Linpack measures the floating point computing power of your device -- essentially, how fast your iPhone can process calculations. The results are shown in Mflop/s which represents how many millions of floating operations were completed per second. The Linpack app is compatible with devices running iOS 4.3 or later and has been optimized for the iPhone 5.
Geekbench 2 ($1)
Geekbench 2 puts several aspects of your iPhone's performance to the test as it runs its benchmarking routines: it measures both processor and memory performance, coming up with an ultimate "Geekbench Score" which you can use to compare your handset with others. Geekbench 2 has been optimized for use with the iPhone 5 and runs on any device with iOS 4.3 or later installed.
