How to Crochet an Elf Beanie
- 1). Make 60 chain stitches using your worsted weight yarn and size US H crochet hook. Join the last chain to the first with a slip stitch to form a circle, being careful to keep the chains lined up neatly as you do, so the chain isn't twisted.
- 2). Make one chain, then make a half double crochet in every chain around for a total of 60 half double crochet stitches. Join with a slip stitch to close the round.
- 3). Make one chain, then make a half double crochet in every stitch around. Join with a slip stitch. Repeat this step for a total of ten more rounds.
- 4). Decrease for the top of the hat. To do this, on the next round, make one chain and then half double crochet two together all the way around; join with a slip stitch. For the following round, make one chain and make a half double crochet in every stitch around, then join with a slip stitch.
- 5). Decrease again. Make one chain and then half double crochet two together all the way around; join with a slip stitch. For the following round, make one chain and make a half double crochet in every stitch around, then join with a slip stitch.
- 6). Make one more decrease round. Make one chain and then half double crochet two together all the way around. This time end with one half double crochet since you have an uneven number; join with a slip stitch.
- 7). Make one chain and make one half double crochet in every stitch around, then join with a slip stitch. Repeat this round until the narrow top of the hat is slightly longer than the height of the main body of the hat, or until you run out of yarn.
- 8). Cut the working yarn with scissors, leaving a 6 inch tail. Yarn over with this tail and draw it through the loop on your hook to fasten off.
- 9). Turn the hat inside out and thread the yarn tail onto an embroidery needle. Use it to close up the point at the top of the hat, then weave in the leftover yarn on the stitches on this side of the hat. Weave in the beginning yarn tail as well, then turn the hat right side out for wearing.
