Acne Facial Masks

Acne occurs when the skin is oily and the pores become clogged. Oils from makeup or resulting from humidity and sweating are among the causes. Dead skin cells too can accumulate and clog the pores of the skin. When bacteria is also trapped in the skin's clogged pores, the result is an infection of the pores, which produces acne.

Topical treatments for mild facial acne include scrubs and masks. Scrubs are applied and washed off the face immediately to exfoliate the skin and remove dead skin cells. An acne facial mask is a skin care treatment that is applied to the skin for several minutes or longer (even overnight) to cleanse the skin and reduce or remove dead skin cells and the oil on the skin that can clog the pores.

Homemade acne facial masks use different natural ingredients--for example, honey; lemon juice and egg whites; or a mixture of brewer's yeast and yogurt. Natural over-the-counter acne facial masks often use clay or oatmeal as the base ingredient for absorbing skin oils. Clay masks are recommended for people with acne-prone oily skin because clay dries the pores and produces few allergic reactions. Other over-the-counter acne facial masks use sulfur as an active ingredient. Sulfur is indicated for the treatment of acne because it acts as an antimicrobial to control the growth of the bacteria that causes acne. This treatment allows the skin to heal, eliminates the outbreak and prevents infection.

There are higher-end, high-tech facial masks and specialized products that use LED light technology for the treatment of mild to moderate acne. LED light masks are available in the dermatologist's office, but there are also at-home products that use similar technologies. A wearable plastic mask that is lined on the inside with LEDs (light emitting diodes) is placed on the face. When a power button is turned on, the mask emits a combination of red light and blue light that is uniformly distributed over the entire face. The light therapy targets cells beneath the skin's surface to inhibit the bacteria that causes acne outbreaks and to reduce inflammatory acne lesions and repair acne damage. The mask automatically turns off after each 15-minute treatment and is recommended to be used daily for a total of 30 treatments. LED acne light therapy masks for home use have FDA approval as medical devices for reducing all types of acne.

Not all facial masks, however, relieve acne by reducing outbreaks or preventing infection; some facial masks simply treat skin redness or irritation or soften the skin. So read the labels and the active ingredients and, for skin problems other than mild acne, make a visit to a board-certified dermatologist.
