Informative Speech Outline Topics
- How-to or process speeches are hallmarks of informative speech topics because they are straight-forward. Topics typically include food, such as how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or macaroni and cheese, but topics can be more complex as well. When choosing the topic, consider the audience's age and interests. Develop topics such as how-to sign up for the draft, fill out financial aid forms or pack for college. Include preparation, supplies and the actual process in the outline. Do not persuade your audience to complete the action, but simply present the method.
- A definition speech defines a topic. Teachers often assign a definition speech to cover complex and new ideas covered in class; for example, different chemicals in a science class or different government types in a social studies class. Definition speeches usually have short time requirements. The outline should include the definition broken down into points. The subpoints are then examples to explain portions of the definition.
- Biographies provide an easy outline that chronicles a person's life. Subject matter possibilities are endless; sports figures include Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods and Jackie Joyner-Kersee; celebrities include Oprah, Will Ferrell, Charlize Theron or Nicholas Cage. Cover basics such as early life, fame and current projects. Also include the person's legacy, such as charitable organizations they support or contributions to their field. For the deceased, the death could be a main point if controversial or abnormal.
- Concept speeches allow students to research any subject. From computers to can openers, democracy to fascism, concept speeches are catch-alls for topics students can explain in an informative speech. Be careful not to choose too large of a concept or your speech will not meet time requirements. Organizing a concept speech can also present difficulties since the organizing techniques are endless. If troublesome, use the main points to narrow ideas. If speaking about vacuum cleaners, make a main point to cover its origins and then discuss its advertising history and future uses.
