How to Treat Pests on a Burning Bush
- 1). Shake over a piece of white paper leaves with silver or yellow spots, or those that have turned red prematurely. Fold the paper to smash the tiny mites even if you can't see them. Unfold the paper. The burning bush has a two-spotted spider mite infestation if you see green streaks on the sheet of paper.
- 2). Spray the underside of the leaves with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap, both low-toxicity products. The mites congregate under the leaves to suck the plant's chlorophyll. Apply according to the rates listed on the manufacturer's label.
- 3). Treat the burning bush with a synthetic miticide as a last resort, since all the options are toxic. Apply a product containing bifenthrin, malathion or permethrin as its active ingredient, for example. Buy a formula and use it according to the instructions on the label.
- 1). Examine the burning bush stems June through July for white and flat crawling insects, the winged euonymus scale in its immature stage. Treat the pest at this point, before it develops a protective shell over its body. The winged euonymus scale causes leaves to fall prematurely, stems to die and it also makes the bush susceptible to winter damage.
- 2). Prune and discard the burning bush branches that have scales.
- 3). Spray the scales with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap according to the manufacturer's recommended application rates. Use this option if pruning fails to control the infestation.
- 4). Treat the winged euonymus scale with a synthetic insecticide as a last alternative. Select a product that has carbaryl, cyfluthrin or malathion in its formula. Apply it according to the product label.
- 1). Look for webbing on the shrub's foliage. Under the web, you see white caterpillars with black heads. Their feeding defoliates the burning bush.
- 2). Prune the leaves with the webbing and discard them.
- 3). Spray a widespread infestation with Bacillus thuringiensis or Beauveria bassiana, which are natural biological controls. Follow the product label for proper use of the option you selected.
- 4). Treat the burning bush with a synthetic insecticide if all else has failed. Get a product that contains carbaryl, fluvalinate or permethrin in its list of ingredients. Apply the product according to the rates listed on the label.
