How to Clean Shotgun Rust
- 1). Wipe the rusted area with a soft cloth and a solvent like Hoppies #9.
- 2). Rub lightly to remove light surface rust.
- 3). Apply a polishing agent on a soft cloth if the solvent doesn't remove the rust. A small amount is all you need. Rub gently with the grain of the steel, then remove the polishing agent with a small amount of solvent.
- 4). Rub with a very fine steel wool if, after trying the above steps, there is still rust on the shotgun. Use a gun oil or solvent with the steel wool and rub with the grain.
- 5). Wipe the area with a clean rag after using the wool and then apply a small amount of fresh oil in that area.
- 6). If you have rust to the point of pitting, take it to a professional. He will file down the metal and re-blue the gun to restore it to its original condition.
