Facts on a Chocolate Mimosa Tree
- In 1990 the first chocolate mimosa was found as a seedling by Dr. Masato Yokoi. The parent plant was a regular mimosa with green leaves. The cultivar was then named Summer Chocolate. The patent was filed in 2003 after the mimosa was found genetically stable to reproduce successfully.
- With long green fern-like leaves that turn burgundy after maturing, this mimosa grows to a height of 20 feet tall, and spreads 15 feet wide. In the summer, puffy pink flowers grow in a corymb shape.
- The Summer Chocolate mimosa tree is not cold hardy and only grows in zones 7 to 10. It prefers the full sun and grows best in most soils. Fast growing, the tree reproduces rapidly by seeds.
