Sports Card Review: Topps Pack Wars

106 10
If you?re looking for the perfect mix between gaming and collecting, look no further than Topps Pack Wars.
Whether you?ve ripped through a pack at your local hobby shop or Wal-Mart, in a stadium or at a Topps sponsored event, it?s safe to say that there is more to Pack Wars than just a bunch of colorful cardboard.

Here?s how it works:

  • Two collectors together purchase one pack of TOPPS PACK WARS ($20 SRP) at their local hobby shop or retail chain.

  • They bust the pack and inside they?ll find: -2 Game Packs (3 cards in each pack for 3 rounds of play). There is one pack for each player. -1 Prize Pack, which goes to the winner
  • Then they play an easily understandable stats game and the best of 3 games takes the prize pack! Prizes include one of the following:
  • Cut Signatures (From Lefty O?Doul to Hank Greenberg to Bill Dickey)
  • Autographs (Alex Rodriguez, Miguel Cabrera, Zack Greinke, Aaron ?(Bleeping)? Boone and more)
  • Autographed Relics (Carlos Beltran, Miguel Cabrera and more)
  • Relics (Albert Pujols, Vlad Guerrero and Sammy Sosa to name a few)
Oh, and did I mention that Topps randomly inserted $100 bills, too? There are 175 total base card playing subjects. The base set also includes a foil parallel, which is serial-numbered to 125. As a bonus, each box includes another Topps Innovation?an MLB Collector Chip.

Now on to the goodies we pulled from our box of Pack Wars:
Autographs: Miguel Cabrera, Aaron Boone, C.C. Sabathia
Relics: Alfonso Soriano, Manny Ramirez, Rafael Palmeiro
Collector Chip: Mark Prior green parallel #/125

Topps Pack Wars is certainly one of the most innovative products to hit the marketplace in a long time. The allure here is a prime mix of sports-card gaming and a guaranteed relic/autograph per pack at a reasonable price point of $20 per pack.

Another key to the product is one of the first certified autographs of Barry Bonds in 2005. We also like the fact that there are a handful of cut signatures randomly inserted, which makes the game of Pack Wars even more exciting.

Keep your eyes out for Pack Wars tournaments and Topps sponsored events, which may be coming to a hobby shop or stadium near you this summer.
