    • 1). Decide on a spot for your roof vent from inside your attic. When determining the location of your roof vent take into consideration the location of your eaves or gable vents. Select a spot close to the ridge or peak of your roof between the roof rafters.

    • 2). Make a pilot hole from inside your attic with your drill and drill bit. Drill the pilot hole all the way through the roof sheathing and shingles on the exterior of your roof.

    • 3). Center your vent on top of your roof and align it with the center of the pilot hole you made in step two. Trace the vent with a chalk pencil to create a template. Measure the inside diameter of your vent, and translate the measurement to the center of your template by marking it with your chalk pencil.

    • 4). Cut out the center with your jig saw. This opens the hole in your roof. Pry up the upper two courses of shingles with your pry bar. Remove any nails and debris that would block the vent's top flashing from being inserted under the shingles. Carefully slide the flashing on your vent under the top course of shingles and over the bottom courses of shingles. Position your vent to seat directly over the opening that you cut. Nail the vent in place with your hammer and roofing nails.

    • 5). Apply roofing cement with your caulking gun over the nails and along each edge of your roof vent. This ensures weatherproofing.
