How to Cut Calla Lillies
- 1). Fill a vase or bucket half full of water. Take a sharp knife and the bucket out to your calla lily plant. Cutting flowers in the morning is the best to ensure long vase life.
- 2). Cut the calla lily flower stalk at an angle using your sharp knife. Using a dull knife, pruning shears or scissors can crush the thick watery stem of the calla lily. If you crush the stalk during cutting it will prevent water from traveling up the stem of your cut flower, and this will shorten its vase life.
- 3). Make cuts at an angle as close to the end of the stalk as possible. Cutting calla lilies at an angle maximizes the amount of water that can travel up the stalks of the cut flowers.
- 4). Put the cut calla lilies into the vase or bucket of water immediately after cutting.
- 5). When arranging the flowers in vases leave the stalks as long as possible. As the bottoms dry out and close over remove the flowers from the vase and make a new diagonal cut a quarter inch above the tip. This will reopen the stalk and extend the life of your cut arrangement.
- 6). Add a squeeze of lemon and a little sugar, lemon lime soda or a touch of plant food to the vase. Replace the water every other day and add new plant food at that time.
- 7). Keep cut calla lilies away from heat sources or cold drafts. Place the cut flowers in a cool place out of direct sunlight.
