How to Paint With Gloss

    • 1). Fill in any imperfections on the walls, such as nail holes cracks and indents with drywall putty. Use putty knife to spread a thin layer of putty, and let the putty dry for at least eight hours. Use a piece of fine grit sandpaper to level out the rough edges. If the crack or indent is still visible, repeat this process until the area is level.

    • 2). Wet a lint-free cloth and wipe the entire surface to remove all dust from the sandpaper and dried putty. Any tiny crumbs from the sandpaper will make the wall look gritty and stand out with the glossy finish. Any dirt on the wall will also prevent the paint from sticking properly. Wait until the walls are dry before continuing.

    • 3). Paint the edges first with a sponge brush, around the trim and the window and door frames. If you carefully paint around these areas, you do not need to edge them with blue tape. Paint on a thin layer and wait until it is tacky, but not completely dry, before adding another coat. Oil-based gloss paint is ideal because it levels out better than other kinds, giving you an even smoother surface.

    • 4). Apply the gloss paint evenly to a paint roller and spread it onto the open areas of the walls. Apply a thin layer and wait for it to become tacky before you add another thin layer. Paint in one 3-foot-by-3-foot square at a time, which will help you layer the paint evenly.
