    • 1). Chop the alkanet root into pieces and place it into a dry, screw-top jar. Pour rubbing alcohol into the jar until the root pieces are covered. Notice the alcohol change color as the solvent begins to extract color from the root. Allow it to soak until you achieve a dark-bluish color. Remove the root pieces and store them in a plastic container.

    • 2). Keep the mixture open overnight to let the alcohol evaporate. Expect the concentrated formula to intensify and turn to a thick concentrated substance. Stir the concentrate with a plastic spoon to blend bits of dried pigment from the side of the jar. Label the jar with a due date of one year.

    • 3). Add oil to the concentrate. Allow it it steep for 24 hours at room temperature. Swirl the mixture from time to time. Do not add any water to the mixture, since the root does not dilute in water. Add the root pieces for a darker color and remove them when you are satisfied. Mix the dye. Warm 1/4 cup of the hair dye on low heat in a small pot on a stove top and apply it to your hair.
