How to Install Tile in Mobile Homes
- 1). Remove all carpet or exterior layers of flooring in the area where you wish to install the tiles. Use a pry bar, nail puller or crow bar to remove these items.
- 2). Pull up all remaining nails, screws and material from the floor surface. If it is a kitchen floor or bathroom you are tiling, remove the moldings, thresh holds and toe stops from the cabinets.
- 3). Lay down 1/4-inch Hardi Backer which is a flooring material designed to be used with tile installations. Nail the Hardi Backer to the floor using 1-inch nails. Most mobile homes will not have a substrate flooring layer suitable for installing tile, but if yours does, skip this step.
- 4). Dry fit your first three square feet of tiling and cut end pieces as necessary for your installation.
- 5). Mix your grout in a plastic 5-gallon bucket following the mixing recommendations on the label. Spread a 1/4 inch layer of grout on the floor with your tiling trowel. Lay in your first sets of tiles, using 1/8 inch spacers.
- 6). Repeat Steps 4 to 5 until the entire area is tiled. Grout the tile using the same mortar mixture and a grout trowel to finish the installation.
