How to Plant Using Flower Pots

    • 1). Create a design for where to place flower pots in your yard or home. The exact placement can make a difference. Small flower pots placed next to big flowers and plants may not even be noticed. This will determine the size and color flower pot to use.

    • 2). Choose a flower pot that complements your landscaping. Flower pots can be purchased at most stores, but any container that holds soil can be used. Popular containers are tires, old boots, used coffee containers, and small decorative tea cups. If using a recycled container, drill holes at the bottom to allow water to drain. This will prevent the plant from drowning.

    • 3). Pour potting soil into the flower pot until it is 3/4 full. Add peat moss to increase soil drainage. Stay away from regular garden soil. Water will make garden soil bundle together, preventing the roots from growing.

    • 4). Place the plant into the pot and add more soil until the roots are covered. Follow instructions that come with the plant to see if it needs full sun or partial shade exposure and place in a location to meet those requirements.

    • 5). Check to see if your plant needs watering by sticking a finger into the soil. If it is dry, your plant needs to be watered thoroughly. Follow watering instructions that came with the plant. Water requirements vary by plant.
