    Types of Herbicides

    • Homeowners often choose the product Roundup to kill unwanted plants and weeds. It is readily available and easy to use. The main active ingredient is Glyphosate. Other products contain other chemicals; their names fill the alphabet, from the product Aatrax, which contains atrazine, to Yukon, which contains halosulfuron and dicamba.

    Effects of Herbicides

    • All herbicides are designed to kill plants, or certain types of plants. Herbicides are generally nonselective and might kill plants you value if you spray too close to them. However, some herbicidal chemicals have been implicated in causing health problems in humans, livestock and wildlife, including digestive and reproductive problems and cancer of the breast and prostate.

    Safe Waiting Period

    • Different brands of herbicides recommend waiting varying lengths of time before you plant a new plant in a treated area. For example, Roundup Pro's product label states that you can use this product before you plant ornamentals, flowers or grass. It also suggests waiting seven or more days before you till, mow or remove treated plants. Michigan State University advises waiting 10 days before you plant trees.
