    • 1). Measure the base of the new register. Determine the width. You will want to make the vent the one inch larger on each side. Crawl into the crawl space and cut a feed hole for the new vent duct. Use a drill to start a hole and the snips to cut the circle the same diameter as the vent piping.

    • 2). Measure the distance to the spot where the vent will be to make sure that the piping will stretch far enough. Place the piping end over the hole and screw in with sheet metal screws. Seal the area around the new duct with sealing tape.

    • 3). Cut the rectangular hole with the jigsaw to the proper width of the base of the register. If possible try to line up seams on the wood floor. This will make cutting easier. Also the best place to put a new register is under a window so no one will place an object over the vent. You want to have a snug fit, but allow for expansion and contraction. An extra 1/4 of an inch on each side will allow for this.

    • 4). Go under the house and screw the vent duct into the floor. There will be six screws included in the kit. These are designed to hold the duct to the floor. To cut back on air loss apply the sealing tape around the new duct edges. This is done to the underside in the crawl space.

    • 5). Place the register into the hole. Some of the registers come with screws. If they do you simply screw the small screws into the floor. This will secure it so it cannot be pulled up.
