    • 1). Determine what type of mattress best suits you. There are many types of mattress that range from most firm to most soft. There are firm, cushion firm, plush, ultra plush, pillow top, box top and eurotop mattresses. Relatively new on the scene are Memory foam and Sleep Number mattresses. Memory foam mattresses conform to your body while Sleep Number beds allow you to change the softness and firmness of your bed,

    • 2). Compare brands within the style of mattress you selected. It is best to go to a mattress store, and lay on all the styles of mattresses to determine the style best fit for you. Do not purchase a mattress at that first store though. Go home and use the internet to find the best brand for you.

    • 3). Compare prices on mattress brands and stores. Prices on the same exact mattress will vary from mattress store to store and mattress chain to chain. Mattress chains will have special deals throughout the year but mostly during holidays.

    • 4). Once you have found the right mattress at the right price at the right store, buy it. It is perfectly acceptable to negotiate the price with the salesman unless he says the particular store does not negotiate.

    • 5). Request that the mattress be delivered to your house if you do not have a big enough car or truck to fit the mattress. It should not cost anything extra, and the deliverymen should put your bed together. Please note that it is customary to tip the deliverymen if they set up your bed.
