How to Divide a Room With Furniture

    • 1). Place a decorative folding screen along an imaginary line in the middle of the room. This provides an actual physical division between room sections.

    • 2). Position an open-shelved bookshelf in the center of the room, dividing the spaces on either side of the bookshelf while still allowing a see-through "wall" between the room areas. Use other furniture, such as a bench, in place of the bookshelf, as a lower-lying room divider.

    • 3). Group similarly themed or -colored furniture in separate areas. For example, place a table and chairs of a certain color in the area of the room you want devoted to eating. In a separate room area, position a sofa and additional items which have colors that are different from, but complementary to, the table and chairs.
