Spiritual Significance Of Marriage
Marriage signifies the tying of the knot or exchanging of rings by two people who make promises to each other of a life long commitment and loving relationship, of fidelity and friendship, of being together and sticking together in good and bad times, of compromising and adjusting to each other's strengths and weaknesses and etc, etc! Now, I know all you readers out there are getting skeptical and I can almost see the sardonic smile on your faces.
Is this possible and true in today's egotistical, competitive and money-oriented world? Is there any truth about marriage making a person holy and saintly? Not to worry, it is indeed a fact that marriage does make people more spiritual, even though there are contrary perceptions to it.
Consider this.
A couple get married, and start living together.
Ideally, they learn about each other and do things out of the love they have for one another, share things, beget children.
The one central point in this is the ego factor.
True spiritual learning takes place only when the attention is diverted from the self.
In catering to the needs of a husband, child or any other relative of the family, a wife's attention gets diverted from her own self.
The husband goes to work (in these days, wives too!) and earns money to look after the family and for security.
Here the husband 's attention is diverted from the self.
Highest order of all, where children are concerned, both the partners join together to keep their children safe and secure, help them to grow strong and healthy and balanced citizens of the future, fuss over them when they are sick and look after all of their needs.
It is especially true that when a child is sick, our intricate tendencies to seek divine guidance and help in healing the child come to the fore, thus paving the way for prayers and please note the point, praying for a child's fast recovery!!! Here again, attention is diverted from the self.
Charity begins at home and feeding guests is deemed to be one of the noblest qualities of all.
We invite friends for parties, gatherings or any other social meetings at the house and unknowingly, we are training ourselves towards this noble quality and are progressing spiritually.
To sum up, attention on the self is diverted, praying comes into fore, feeding one and all takes place, doing one's duty by looking after the family needs and giving love and support comes to the fore, friendships are strengthened and I think, by now, you would have understood why marriage is a paving way for spiritual upliftment.
In conclusion, I would say, if this is not Godliness, what else is? This article is meant for healthy, normal, regular marriage relationships where the partners live together with their children and where the elders are well respected and taken care of.
