How to Decorate Using Chair Rails
- 1). Place a miter box flat on a work surface. Attach the box to the table with clamps to keep the box from shifting on the table.
- 2). Measure the wall where the chair rail will be installed. Mark the back of the chair rail to indicate where the trim piece should be cut.
- 3). Set the chair rail into the miter box. Line up the pencil mark on the back of the trim piece with the correct angle on the miter box. Corners will require a 45 degree angle. Clamp the wood into the box.
- 4). Cut the trim piece with a hand saw. Work from back to front and move the saw slowly through the wood. Unlock the clamp.
- 5). Find the wall studs using a stud finder. Mark the position of the wall studs with a light pencil mark.
- 6). Hold the trim on the wall where it will be installed. Hold a level up to the chair rail to check that the piece will be evenly hung. Nail the trim to the wall with a nail gun through the wall stud. Fill the nail holes with wood filler.
