How to Dress Like a Surfer

    • 1). Get the right board shorts. For men and women, a pair of "boardies" is essential. These shorts are knee-length and loose-fitting. They are always brightly colored, often with a loud print. At the top is a Velcro fly and a drawstring. They are lightweight and waterproof, and ideal for playing in and out of the water.

    • 2). Find your surf footwear. Flip-flops, also called thongs or jandles, are the surfer footwear of choice. Don't wear socks or more elaborate sandals. They are lightweight and easily slipped on and off for when you're in the sand. Flip-flops can be found just about anywhere at a wide range of prices and quality.

    • 3). Eschew a shirts if you're a guy. Surfer men, when not in the water, are often found working on their tans without shirts. Despite the risk of sunburn and skin cancer, unless it's cold or shirts are required, surfer men don't wear shifts. If you'd like to wear a surf shirt, look for a bright color and a loose fit. Alternatively, wear a wet-suit top.

    • 4). Wear a bikini top or a wet-suit top when in the water if you're a woman. On land, women tend to wear tighter-fitting tops to counterbalance the loose fitting board shorts. Casual tank tops are often worn over a bikini top. The look is sporty, so sundresses aren't usually worn.

    • 5). Finish your look with surfer accessories. Don't wear jewelry on the beach, but look for a pair of functional sunglasses that will stay in place when playing beach volleyball. Carry beach gear, such as a towel, volleyball and sunscreen. If you really want a surfer-like tan, try self-tanners. Keep your hair messy, like it's been windblown all day.
