    Way of Life

    • Introduce the Inca way of life by presenting a speech about where Incas lived, what they did to survive and what foods they ate. Asking the kids to bring in photos from magazines or the Internet showing Incas and their lives gets them involved early on and increases curiosity about the subject. A documentary would also makes a nice visual. Reinforce the newly gained knowledge by getting the kids to participate in team quizzes.

    Arts and Crafts

    • Arts and crafts are a great way to involve kids in hands-on activities. Create masks and pyramids using pictures as models. Craft activities are a great introduction to discussing art with kids and informing them about different cultures. Masks are a powerful Inca symbol and are easily made of clay, baked in the oven and painted. They can also be formed out of play dough or fashioned out of old newspapers and glue before being painted with acrylic paints. Another craft project is the construction of pyramids, another important symbol for the Inca, out of cardboard or clay.

    Fairy Tales

    • Listening to fairy tales or myths is both enjoyable and instructional, especially when the tales are read either by the teacher or students who are proficient in reading. The Inca Creation Myth or Flood Myth are especially enjoyable and form a basis for discussions about Inca culture, religion and arts. The tales are an introduction into a group myth writing exercise where kids practice using their imaginations to create their own fairy tales.

    Songs and Dances

    • Songs and dances are a vibrant part of Inca culture. Start by playing a video of Inca dances and then let the kids try to imitate the simple moves. Discuss the meaning of the different types of dances and ask your students' opinions on the therapeutic value of dancing and singing. Listening to songs lyrics or reading them aloud as poetry will open up discussion about the values and common concerns of the Inca.
