How to Make Seaweed Solution

    • 1). Collect seaweed that has washed ashore if you live on the beach. This is the freshest, healthiest seaweed. You can purchase seaweed at Chinese or health food markets. You can also purchase seaweed extract or seaweed organic fertilizer powder from some lawn and gardening supply companies.

    • 2). Rinse off the collected seaweed with water.

    • 3). Combine the seaweed with water in a bin with a lid. Use two to three hearty handfuls of seaweed per five gallons of water. Place the covered bin outside in a dry, protected area. If you're using the extract, use 1 1/2 tbsp. of extract per gallon of water. If you're using the seaweed organic fertilizer powder, use 1/4 lb. of fertilizer powder per gallon of water.

    • 4). Let the seaweed and water sit for one to two months or until the seaweed has largely decomposed and the water has turned brown. (It will be a bit stinky.) Stir periodically throughout. If you're using the seaweed organic fertilizer powder, let the fertilizer powder steep for two days.

    • 5). Strain the decomposed seaweed from the water. This is your seaweed solution.

    • 6). Dilute the solution for watering. Use one to three cups of the solution per gallon of water.

    • 7). Water your lawn and garden with the solution using a watering can or a hand-trigger sprayer. Use the solution to soak the soil, as well as to spray the leaves of plants. To reach the roots of plants, or for larger irrigation needs, add the solution to a drip irrigation system. You can also use the seaweed solution for rooting and for spraying on and feeding houseplants.
