Fabric Glue Uses
- Fabric glue provides many creative options for craft, sewing and fashion design projects. This glue comes in spray cans, bottles and tubes to adjust and suit various application methods. The glue goes on wet and dries clear, but it tends to stiffen fabric. Joining items to fabric using glue is less permanent than sewing. Frequent abrasion, pulling, laundering and sun exposure will weaken the glue's bond over time.
- Fabric glue is suitable to create simple, straight seams that receive little stress. The glue is best for Items that are not frequently handled or subjected to stress like curtains and lampshade coverings. Fabric glue is ideal for basting (joining fabric together to hold in place prior to stitching a seam) seams together in clothing, such as during the construction of a patch pocket. The glue will hold the patch pocket in position while it is sewn onto the body of the garment. However, fabric glue is not ideal for garment construction or upholstering furniture due to the constant friction these items receive.
- Appliqué is a fabric embellishment technique where decorative cutouts of fabric are sewn to the face of a larger piece of fabric or garment. Fabric glue will join these cutouts to fabric or garments. For garments, strategically apply the appliqué on the garment avoiding stress points such as the elbow, shoulders, bust, buttocks and knee areas. Avoiding these areas enables the glued appliqué to remain on the garment and withstand laundering.
- Fabric glue adheres sequins, glitter, rhinestones and other materials that have a flat bottom to fabric. Handsewing sequins is time consuming and increases the cost of a garment due to the amount work required to apply them. Using fabric glue to apply sequins and other non-cloth items to fabric will reduce the amount of time spent applying such embellishments.
- Advanced sewers and fashion designers can use fabric glue to manipulate fabric. Fabric glue stiffens the area of fabric where it is applied. For garments that require stiffness in certain areas, apply fabric glue to the underside of the fabric, wait for the glue to dry and finish sewing the area. Some fabrics such as silk and acetate darken when exposed to any liquid or "wet" substance. Watermark-like designs can be created on such fabrics using fabric glue by applying the glue with a paintbrush or sponge to the fabric and creating any imaginable design.
