Types of Glass Casing to Enclose Ship Models
- A real glass case is not as susceptible to sunlight and heat as other case material. Real glass is also much more durable than other materials. However, the glass does weigh more and will need frequent cleaning.
- Acrylic glass weighs much less than real glass and has very clear and clean edges. There are many advantages to using an acrylic ship display case. Cleaning consists of wiping the acrylic with a soft cloth. Acrylic is much more flexible than glass, therefore breakage is not as common. It is easy to cut acrylic, and therefore, custom-size cases are easier and less expensive to make. It is also possible to polish away any minor scratches on the case surface. Lucite is a form of acrylic that is very popular for display cases.
- This is a special type of glass that is used to make display cases, partitions and even bank screens. The liquid crystal glazing is composed of two sheets of glass and the liquid crystal film in between the two glass sheets. When the glass is in the off state, the liquid crystals do not align and make the glass opaque, so light cannot pass through. In the on state the liquid crystals align and the glass turns transparent. This is an excellent choice if your ship model is light sensitive and you do not want it in the light at all times.
- Traditionally, ship models are displayed in glass bottles. However, there are size issues, as most bottles are quite small and bottles are only available in specific sizes. If you have a small ship model, then a bottle is one option for a glass display case.
