  CNC machines are computer controlled overhead routers. They have revolutionized the cutting of wood, plastics and composite material. They can route beautiful, delicate designs or cut through thick pieces of hardwood to exacting specifications; and they do it all automatically. The CNC operator must understand and respect his machine and must act as both a computer operator and a woodworker.
  
  

Keyboard

• CNC machines are run by computers. Typing is required, but only as commands. The operator must have a basic understanding of keyboard functions and how to care for a computer. The operator must understand simple codes that tell the CNC what to do and how to enter the codes into the computer. The operator must also understand how to activate individual components manually, when the machine is not working properly, and know how to read diagnosis of machine problems from code read-outs.
  
  

Knives

• CNC machines have a wide assortment of knives. The operator must understand each and every knife. He must know how to measure each knives' cutting radius with calipers, and then enter the knife data into the machine's computer. He must also know how to sharpen or "grind" the knife. There is an order in which the knives must be assembled. The CNC uses this order to automatically select certain knives to perform certain procedures. This order can never be compromised. Knife, care, maintenance and order is a skill that must be understood completely.
  
  

Muscle

• The CNC operator must have a strong back and be capable of lifting heavy weights all day. Even though the machine cuts the projects automatically, the operator has to lift them onto the CNC table, position them correctly and then remove them when the machine has completed the task. The operator must be able to stand on his feet for hours at a time.
