How to Make Homemade Doll Clothes

    • 1). Measure the doll. Measure from the nape of the doll's neck to the end of her torso, around its waist, and the length of the doll. Write these measurements down so you have them every time you create homemade clothes for this doll. If you are making the doll clothes as a gift, you can follow a simple pattern with general measurements for a small, medium or large size doll.

    • 2). Choose your fabric. Remember fabric for homemade doll clothes doesn't have to come from the fabric store. Scrounge around the house and find old things you no longer use-kitchen towels, pillowcases or scarves work well. You can also find scraps of fabric sold in bulk at fabric stores that come from previously stocked material.

    • 3). Cut your pattern. Apply your measurements to the pattern and create the dress. Use a measuring tape and a pencil to measure and mark where you will cut on your desired fabric. With the pencil, softly mark where you'll need to cut the fabric. You may want to leave a few centimeters of extra space to make it easier to dress, especially if a child will be playing with the clothes.

    • 4). Finish the seams. Now that you have your pattern, take it to the sewing machine to get a polished look. Finish the seams by hand if you have the skill level, as it is a fairly simple job. Using a sewing machine will make the edges of the garment smooth and ensure a durable piece.

    • 5). Add your closures. Add your closures, whether they're buttons or snaps, to the dress. Attach them with the sewing machine down the center opening of the garment. After this is completed, you can add trim or ribbon by hand or with a sewing machine to add extra flair to your homemade doll clothes.
