How to Install Christmas House Lights

    • 1). Find a location in your home relatively close to an electrical outlet that still allows you to hang your lights in a prominent location. Use an extension cord if necessary.

    • 2). Lay out your Christmas lights in a straight line, untangling them as you go. Examine the line to ensure that every outlet has a light that is not broken. Replace any damaged or missing lights before you start hanging the line.

    • 3). Plug the light strand into an electrical outlet while it is still on the ground. If it does not light up, it might mean that you need to inspect the main light. The main light is a single light near the end of the line that plugs into the electrical socket. It should have a slightly different look than all the other lights.

    • 4). Replace the string of lights if they do not work after you twist the main light. If it works, unplug the string of lights before you start hanging them.

    • 5). Use a tall ladder to reach the section of roof where you want to hang your lights. Install plastic light hooks into the roof at two foot intervals.

    • 6). Step down from the ladder. Retrieve the string of lights at one end, using the side that does not plug into the electrical outlet.

    • 7). Climb back up the ladder and start hooking the lights into the plastic hooks. You can hang them in a straight line or hang them so there is a little slack between each hook, making a looping effect.

    • 8). Leave enough slack at the end of the line so it can easily reach the electrical socket. Plug the lights in.
