How to Build a Teak Planter Box

    • 1). Decide the size of your teak planter. Measure the spot where you will display the planter to determine its length, width and depth. Keep in mind that a depth of up to 10 inches is sufficient for roots to grow. Avoid keeping the planter any wider than 3 feet or else it will be difficult to access the plants in the center. Note the dimensions on paper.

    • 2). Purchase two same-size ¾ to 1-inch thick teak boards for the front and back of the planter, two same-size ¾ to 1-inch thick teak boards for the short sides, and a 1-inch thick base board the length of the front board but as wide as the sides.
If cutting them yourself, mark the dimensions for each side on the teak board with a pen and cut over it carefully with a handsaw.

    • 3). Drill 1-inch drainage holes in the base board, spaced 8 to 10 inches apart.

    • 4). Place the base on an even surface and hold the back piece against one of its long edges so the joint is flush. Join both the pieces together by drilling a row of galvanized woodscrews, spaced 6 inches apart. Review the joint to make sure it is secure before placing one of the side pieces against the short edges of the base and back. Align its top to keep it at the same level as the back piece and check the joint so it is even and flush before attaching it in place with wood screws.

    • 5). Attach the front to the planter the same way, aligning its top edge with the other pieces before drilling it into place. Once secured, attach the second side to the planter.
