How to Put a Slight Texture When Painting Walls

    • 1). Place a drop cloth at the base of the wall and over adjacent surfaces that you do not wish to get any paint on. Secure the drop cloth into place with painter's tape. Place painter's tape along the edges of the wall covering any molding so that you create a clean clear border to the painted surface.

    • 2). Measure the area you're painting, and cut enough tissue with scissors into 20-by-24-inch squares to cover the surface that you're painting.

    • 3). Mix the latex paint thoroughly and pour a small amount of the paint into the paint roller pan. Use a paintbrush to trim wall edges and corners. Paint a section of the wall slightly larger than the 20-by-24-inch piece of tissue paper. Use a paint roller for faster coverage.

    • 4). Ball the tissue loosely in one hand, crinkling the paper to create a texture. Spread the sheet of crinkled paper onto the painted section of wall, taking care to place the paper as squarely as possible. Smooth the edges of the paper onto the wet paint with your glove-covered hand to prevent the edges from curling upwards from the wall's surface.

    • 5). Paint over the paper, concealing the material beneath the new layer of paint. The texture created by crinkling the paper will appear on the wall's surface once the paint is applied. Paint a new section of wall right next to the applied paper and place another piece of tissue paper onto the new section, with the edge slightly overlapping the edge of the painted over tissue. Repeat the application process, overlapping paper about 1/2 inch until you cover the entire wall with the slight texture. Allow the paint to dry for the manufacturer recommended time before touching the surface.
