How do I Make a Bacteria Cell Out of JELL-O?
- 1). Immerse the petri dishes in hot or boiling water to sterilize them, if they have not been pre-sterilized. This eliminates any organisms already on the dish that might contaminate your results.
- 2). Prepare the Jell-O by mixing it with the boiling water. You will need 2 cups of water for every packet of Jell-O.
- 3). Pour the Jell-O mixture into the petri dishes until half full. Let Jell-O set, covered, in the refrigerator for at least four hours.
- 4). Collect bacteria, from a pre-existing culture or from a place on the body, such as inside the mouth, using a cotton swab. Smear the swab across the surface of the Jell-O. During this step, uncover and cover the petri dish quickly to avoid other cultures from contaminating the experiment.
- 5). Allow petri dishes to sit, covered, at room temperature for several days until bacteria cultures become visible.
