    Ribbons

    • Add ribbons to your hat box. Cloth or paper ribbons work equally well. You can use regular glue (like used in elementary school) or a hot glue gun to attach the ribbons to you hat box. Try creating a basket look by weaving different colors of ribbon together. Tie the ribbons into different sized bows and attach to the hat box.

    Buttons

    • Add buttons to your hat box using glue. Use different colors, sizes and shapes of buttons for an eclectic look. Choose faux pearl and rhinestone buttons for a more Hollywood look for your hat box. Use several shades of the same color to create a monochromatic look. Arrange the buttons in different shapes such as hearts, circles or triangles.

    Shells

    • Add shells to your hat box using glue. Cover the hat box completely with shells or arrange in shapes or patterns. Vary the colors, sizes and shapes of the shells you use to decorate your hat box to add depth, dimension and texture to the hat box. Place on the counter in your beach-themed bathroom or bedroom.

    Fabric

    • Cover your hat box with fabric using glue. Use a denim-covered hat box to store small toys in a boy's bedroom. Add pink taffeta and lace to a hat box you will use to store a little girl's treasures. Match the fabric of your hat box to the fabric of your kitchen curtains and use it to store small kitchen items like measuring spoons and the like.

    Decoupage

    • Decoupage pictures or photos to your hat box. Use recipes cut from magazines or cook books to decorate a hat box used in the kitchen. Store buttons, needles and thread in a hat box covered in old sewing patterns. Use pieces of newspaper to decoupage a hat box used on your desk.
