How to Build Wine Cellar Shelves

    • 1). Measure the area where you will place the wine shelves. For this tutorial, the shelf will be 24 inches long and 10 inches deep.

    • 2). Cut two, 24-inch-long pieces and one, 22-inch-long piece of 1-inch-by-2-inch cedar. Cut 10, 10-inch-long pieces of 1-inch-by-2-inch cedar.

    • 3). Set one of the 22-inch boards with the 1-inch side facing up. Apply wood glue to the short ends of the 22-inch-long piece, and place one of the 10-inch-long boards with the 1-inch side facing up at the left edge of the 22-inch board, and one of the 10-inch-long boards at the right edge. You will now have a rectangle with one of the long sides missing. These will be the support boards for your shelf.

    • 4). Drill two, 1 ½-inch wood screws through the outside of both 10-inch boards to join them to the 22-inch piece.

    • 5). Apply glue to the top of the upper left and right hand corners of the rectangle you made previously. Place one of the remaining 24-inch-long pieces, 2-inch-wide side up, across the top of the rectangle. Line the edges up so that the corners align, and the board is straight. Screw one, 1 ½-inch wood screw in through the top of the board on both the right and left corners.

    • 6). Apply glue to the top of the bottom left- and right-hand corners of the rectangle. Place the remaining 24-inch board across the bottom of the rectangle. Line the edges up so that the corners align, and the board is straight. Screw one, 1 ½-inch wood screw in through the top of the board on both the right and left corners.

    • 7). Attach the 10-inch-long pieces to the shelf vertically. With the 2-inch side of the 10-inch-long board facing up, apply glue to the bottom of the 10-inch board at both the top and bottom short sides. Place the board even with the left outside edge vertically. Screw one, 1 ½-inch wood screw through the top of the board at both top and bottom edges. Repeat this process every 3 inches. Your shelf will end up with eight vertical supports. Bottles will rest on these supports when placed horizontally on the shelf.

    • 8). Use a level to draw a straight line across the wall where you will install your shelf.

    • 9). Sand the entire shelf to smooth any rough areas. Wipe the shelf off with a damp rag to remove any sawdust.

    • 10

Seal the entire shelf with a polyurethane sealant using a foam paintbrush. Allow the shelf to dry completely.

    • 11

Pre-drill holes into the 22-inch-long support board at 6, 12, and 18 inches. Pre-drill holes into both 10-inch side support boards at 2 and 6 inches.

    • 12

Use a ½-inch drill bit to drill holes into the wall where you will place the shelf, at the same measurements you drilled the holes into the support boards.

    • 13

Push the toggle bolts, with the toggles removed, through each of the pre-drilled holes in the support board. Attach the toggle to the ends of each of the bolts with the toggle folding toward the board. When you push the toggle through the drilled holes in the wall, it will open up to hold the shelf in the wall.

    • 14

Push the toggles into the holes you drilled into the wall, and line the shelf up with the mark you previously made on the wall. Use a level to make sure the shelf is straight.

    • 15

Pull back slightly on the shelf to apply pressure to the toggle, while drilling the bolt into the wall. Repeat this step for each bolt.

    • 16

Place your wine bottles horizontally on the shelf between each of the slats. Your shelf will hold eight bottles of wine.
