How to Sew a Homemade Awning
- 1). Measure the window that you want to cover with an awning. Measure the width and also how far out you want the awning to come, 1 to 2 feet is standard, depending on the width of the window. Add 10 inches to the width to account for the pole casing and add 6 inches to the length for hemming.
- 2). Cut your canvas to the necessary measurements.
- 3). Thread your sewing machine with a heavy-duty nylon thread, as it will hold up much better to weather extremes than regular cotton thread.
- 4). Create pole casings on either side of the window awning. Fold the raw edges under 3 inches and then another 3 inches. Use pins to hold in place and then sew.
- 5). Hem the bottom edge of the awning by folding the fabric under 1 inch and then another 1 inch to hide the raw edges. Use pins to hold the fabric in place and sew straight across.
- 6). Fold down the top edge of the awning, where it will attach to the house, 3 inches and then another 3 inches. Use pins to hold the fabric in place and sew.
- 7). Measure across the top of the window casing for grommet placing. Plan on two or three grommets, depending on the width of the window. Transfer the measurements to the end of the awning that attaches to the house.
- 8). Read the manufacturer's directions for attaching the grommets. Use the tools that come with the grommets to attach them to the awning at the measured marks.
- 9). Insert the poles into the casings at the sides of the awning. Attach the poles to the house according to the manufacturer's directions.
- 10
Attach the awning to the house at the grommets using bolts or screws and a drill.
