How to Refinish a Kitchen Table
- 1). Brush a thick layer of chemical stripper on the table. Allow the stripper to sit per manufacturer directions. Remove the stripper with a paint scraper or putty knife. Repeat this process until all of the finish has been removed from the kitchen table.
- 2). Clean the stripper from the table following the directions indicated by the manufacturer. Allow the table to dry completely.
- 3). Lightly sand the table with a sanding block and fine-grit sandpaper. This will smooth the wood and prepare it for the wood stain. When you have finished sanding, vacuum the table and wipe it down with a tack cloth. The table needs to be free of dust before you stain it.
- 4). Brush wood stain on the table. Wipe the table with a clean cloth to take off any extra stain. Allow the stain to dry.
- 5). Finish the table by brushing it with polyurethane. After the finish is thoroughly dry, lightly sand the table with fine-grit sandpaper. Once sanded, wipe the table down with a tack cloth. Apply a second coat of polyurethane. Wait for the polyurethane to dry before use.
