Homeopathy and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

ADHD is short for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder which is a term used to describe a group of behaviors that most often are seen in young children (inattention, impulsivity, hyperactivity). But while certain symptoms of ADHD such as hyperactivity may be more noticeable in young children research tells us that this condition continues into adulthood about half the time and can present serious obstacles both personally and professionally.

So whether you are a parent looking for the best, and of course the safest, treatment for your child or an adult who is looking to level the playing field with his/her non-ADHD competitors finding an effective ADHD treatment should be a top priority

One ADHD treatment option that seems to deliver both on safety and effectiveness is homeopathy.

What are homeopathy ADHD remedies and are they herbal remedies?

While homeopathic ADHD remedies generally contain a great many herbs they aren't considered to be herbal remedies!

Homeopathic ADHD remedies are based on natural resources and do not contain any synthetic element. The basic principle is that a drug in its diluted form will cure a person of the symptoms that the same drug induces when given/taken in its crude form. In other words the theory that "Like Cures Like". The homeopathic regime is steeped in an odd system of dilutions whereby rectified spirits are added to the mother tincture in dilutions ranging from ninety-nine to one depending upon whether the decimal or the centesimal scale is being used. Put simply homeopathic ADHD remedies are a combination of diluted ingredients which in their raw form would trigger at least one of these three symptoms: inattention, impulsivity, or hyperactivity.

Are homeopathic ADHD remedies effective?

There are few studies to tell us whether these types of remedies are truly effective but the few that have been done paint a picture of that is quite remarkable. It is important to point out that not all homeopathic remedies for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder contain the same ingredients so one formula might work better than another depending on the symptoms being treated.

One impressive study worth looking at was published in the British Homeopathic Journal. The study was double blind, placebo controlled, and consisted of 43 ADHD challenged children.

After ten days children in the group taking homeopathic ADHD remedies displayed considerably less ADHD behavior than those given placebos.

A follow-up evaluation was conducted 60 days later. The results were as follows: 57% of children which had responded to homeopathic treatment continued to improve, even though the homeopathic ADHD remedies had been discontinued; 24% relapsed by the time of the follow-up; and 19% continued to improvement but only when taking homeopathic medicine.

Comparing these statistics to prescription stimulants

Stimulants medications such as Ritalin are effective about 70% of the time which is equivalent to the 73% result seen with homeopathic remedies. So for the most part the effective rate is the same.

Where homeopathy seems to gain the upper hand is in permanent or long-term results where prescription ADHD remedies have not be proven to provide any benefit once their use has been discontinued.

In conclusion, ADHD is a very complicated condition which co-exists with other conditions 70% of the time making it difficult to treat effectively with any one treatment approach. That said, homeopathic ADHD remedies are certainly one building block worth considering especially when combined with other side effect free treatment approaches such as behavioral therapies.
