There are three levels of leadership within the academy. The top level consists of 42 trustees elected by the boards of each individual chapter of the academy. These boards constitute the second level of academy leadership. At the third level are the chapters themselves, of which there are 12: Atlanta, Chicago, Florida, Los Angeles, Memphis, Nashville, New York, Pacific Northwest, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Texas and Washington, D.C. - The Recording Academy has a special wing for technical professionals.music control 2 image by Pavel Losevsky from Fotolia.com
Known colloquially as the “P&E Wing,” the Producers and Engineers Wing of the academy exists for all recording industry professionals working in the more technical fields of the recording industry, including engineers, remixers, producers, technologists and manufacturers. Established in 1997, the Latin branch of the academy exists to serve members in all fields of the Latin recording industry. The Latin Recording Academy is owned by all of its members but governed by 16 trustees who come from a variety of nationalities and areas of expertise. The Grammy Foundation was established in 1989 with the mission to spread appreciation for the significance of recorded music to American life. The foundation is responsible for the planning and operation of the annual Grammy Awards--the largest music event of the year. The Recording Academy began trying to project the voices of music-makers in national affairs in 1998 by opening an office in Washington, D.C. The Advocacy and Government Relations office serves members of all areas of the recording industry in front of Congress. One goal of the Recording Academy’s advocates is to secure royalties to all artists who receive airplay, which, as of 2010, the laws do not require.
