How to Get a Swirled Look on the Ceiling

    • 1). Tape plastic drop cloths to the walls with painter's tape and drape cloths over any objects left in the room.

    • 2). Open up a bucket of drywall texture compound and mix it up to loosen the material.

    • 3). Spread the compound on the ceiling with a trowel in a 3-foot square area.

    • 4). Use a wire brush over the compound to make a wave pattern. As you create the brushed wavy lines in the material, you can add a little more flair by twisting the brush around and making a loop as you move it.

    • 5). Spread compound on a new section of ceiling next to the first.

    • 6). Brush on the second section. Overlap the edges and ends of the previous section's brush strokes so that the surface appears continuous. Work quickly so that the compound does not dry out while you are trying to swirl the surface.
