Cost

• Palladium is cheaper than gold or platinum, but is more expensive than silver. The most important metal to compare it to in these terms is platinum as they are both platinum group metals. This means they share the same physical and chemical properties, such as resistance to tarnishing. Alloying

• White gold has become increasingly popular choice of metal for jewelry as it is cheaper than yellow gold. White gold is made by alloying gold with a white metal. This is normally nickel or manganese, but palladium can be used as well. The only specific advantage of using palladium over other alloying metals is that it helps the mixed metal achieve a clean, shiny finish, which can be dulled if another metal is used.
  
  

Ductility

• All jewelry metals are ductile as they need to be easily formed into the desired shape. Like gold, platinum and silver, palladium also has this property, but as it is cheaper than the alternatives it is more commonly used for gemstone settings. Settings are normally ornate pieces of metal on top of a ring or attached to necklaces and earrings. Tarnish Resistant

• Palladium is tarnish resistant so it will not go dull or rust. This is very important for jewelry as reconditioning requires some serious work. Platinum and gold reconditioning requires a thin layer to be shaved of the top, which weakens the jewelry. Palladium does not suffer from the same problems as other metals, so it will stay shiny for longer.
